Tartan Campervan Hire on Arran

Arran is one of the most picturesque Scottish islands and sits in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre. The ferry terminal at Ardrossan is only 20minutes from The Tartan Camper Company and we advise that you book your crossing in advance as the island is a popular touring holiday destination. Arran is 19 miles long by 10 miles wide but has a remarkable diversity of landscapes and seascapes.

The pretty villages on Arran’s beautiful coastline are complemented by a rugged and mountainous interior in the north and green rolling hills and woodland in the south.

If you’re planning a campervan holiday to Arran, you may be surprised by just how much there is to do.

You could choose to tour the island, stopping off at the many places of interest – with a distillery, castles, gardens, museums, heritage centre’s, craft shops and art galleries. There are plenty of outdoor activities to try as well: hill walking, fishing, boat trips, paragliding, water skiing, quad biking and cycling. If history is your thing, Arran has lots to offer – from ancient stone circles to 14th century castles.

Arran is also gaining an international reputation as a destination for ‘foodies’, with a wide variety of high quality local produce on offer: from salmon and venison to chocolate and beer. Arran is also the ideal choice for anyone wishing to treat themselves to a spa, enjoy the fresh air and indulge in some of the natural therapies on offer.

There are also plenty of events happening on the island throughout the year – from folk festivals and hill races, to highland games and golf tournaments. Don’t forget your clubs – there are no less than seven golf courses on the island.

It’s also worth pointing out one of the things that you won’t find on Arran – a single set of traffic lights! This is the perfect island to enjoy in your Tartan Campervan.

The ferry crossing by car ferry from Ardrossan is served by the large and modern, MV Caledonian Isles, which has a range of on board facilities including a café serving meals, snacks, teas & coffees, a licensed bar, shop, soft play area and various comfortable lounges.  The crossing from Ardrossan to Brodick takes 55 minutes and it is advisable to book your crossing in advance.

Alternatively, during the summer months, you can also sail from Claonaig (Kintyre) to Lochranza in the north of the Island.  The shorter crossing takes only 30 minutes, however, the smaller ferry whilst pleasant and efficient has no catering facilities on board.  During the winter months, there is a reduced service which sails to Tarbert (Kintyre) taking approximately 1.5 hours.

Ferry Services are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne. Please see their web site for the latest ferry timetables and bookings to and from the island. When booking the ferry, you will be asked the length of your campervan. It is 4.5metres which is shorter than most 4×4 vehicles.
